Please Help North Carolinians Devastated by Catastrophic Flooding

Editor’s note: This post was written by Ashley Kight, office manager and spouse of Rod Kight.

As most readers of this blog know, Kight Law Office is based in Asheville, NC, which was devastated by catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Helene. Thankfully, Rod and I were at our home in Mexico just before the storm hit. Several of our children, family members, and many friends were there during the flooding. Fortunately, they are safe. It was a scary and difficult weekend for us not being able to connect with them due to widespread cell outages. That being said, everyone in the Asheville area is currently in a critical situation and desperately needs assistance.

In Asheville and in the surrounding areas, there is no water, not even for boiling to drink. There is no food, no electricity, and no gas for anyone who might be able to escape. Many in remote areas remain unaccounted for. Even our hospital was without power (no generators) or water for days. The death toll, currently at over 40, will certainly rise in the coming days, especially if basic needs are not met. (The fact that another hurricane is brewing, which may cause more rain and flooding, compounds the problem.)

If you are able, please consider making a donation to an organization like the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund (link here) that is providing aid to the Asheville area. More information can be found online, including this article, “Death toll triples in Asheville area after Hurricane Helene guts North Carolina: ‘There were bodies in the trees’“. You can watch drone videos of the destruction here and here.
